GRAND MARAIS MINNESOTA AND GUNFLINT TRAIL SNOWMOBILE TRAIL CONDITIONS

Well we have been having a great snow winter thus far at our Minnesota winter resort on the Gunflint Trail. On Saturday night the Gunflint Trail received another 6”-8” of fresh snow and that was on top of the 4” - 5” two days prior. The snowmobile trails in the Grand Marais, and Gunflint Trail areas are starting to get groomed on a regular basis now. I went to the mailbox this morning and the snowmobile trail groomer was just heading out for the day.

Overall the snowmobile trails in the Gunflint Trail and Grand Marais, MN area are in the best shape I have seen this early in the winter vacation for some time. Cool temps are continued to be forecasted, so snowmobile trail conditions are maintaining quite well. They are forecasting more snow for northern MN towards the end of the week and it is snowing very lightly right now and the current temp is +5.

Below you will find a picture of the snow depth. The snow depth picture was hard to shoot due to all of the wind we have recently had but as you can see it shows 24” on the ground. I would say that 24" is the minimum of what we have with more closer to Lake Superior.

MINNESOTA SNOWMOBILE RESORT LOG LODGE

Here's a photo of the latest construction progress on the new log lodge building at our northern Minnesota family winter resort. There had not been a lot of progress with the holidays and some extreme cold weather but we are getting back on track now. With all of the cold weather we have had, it has made the work environment tough but we are working through it.

SNOWMOBILE TRAIL REPORT

We received a 2" to 3" blanket of fresh snow along the Gunflint Trail during the morning of December 29th. The snowmobile trails in the Grand Marais and Gunflint Trail areas are starting to get some traffic and the snowmobile club has been out grooming. The reports I have heard from people that have been out snowmobiling is that the snowmobile trails are in pretty great shape with a good base of snow to work with as they continue to groom.

The photo below, looking across Hungry Jack Lake, was taken on December 29th and shows the current snow conditions that our winter cabin and log cabin rental customers are enjoying at our Minnesota snowmobiling resort during their winter get-away snowmobiling vacations.

Little by little we are getting close to having the main log lodge building closed in. The front deck on the lodge is being worked on while we await delivery of windows. In addition, there are a couple of window openings to finish before the arrival of the windows for our resorts lakeside log lodge building.

Winter has arrived at Hungry Jack Lodge winter resort on the Gunflint Trail in Grand Marais, Minnesota. As you can see in the pictures that I took yesterday morning. We currently have around 8” of snow on the ground. We did receive about 3” of snow earlier this week here at Gunflint Trail winter resort. I do know that Grand Marais received about 4”+ Friday night. We are expecting to get more snow this weekend I will send out a report once the conditions change.

The snowmobile club has been out working on the trails to get them ready for the upcoming season. No grooming has started yet but if we get more snow we anticipate the trails will be started to be groomed, again I will let you know when this happens. We have a good solid 8”+ of ice here on Hungry Jack Lake. I have not had a chance to go out and drill another hole to see what the current conditions are.

Our Minnesota winter resort on the Gunflint Trail is blanketed with snow and it won't be long before the winter snowmobiling vacation season starts. Work is progressing on our new lodge building while we await our first snowmobile and ice fishing winter rental cabin guests.

Initially there were delays in starting construction due to awaiting permits and the like. And, there were instances of having to wait for materials that did not get delivered on time.

But, as you can see above, the walls are now erected on the new Hungry Jack Resort log lodge and the roof framing is partially complete. Fall rain and now snow & cold weather has caused construction to be somewhat slow but we have not stopped and are working as quickly as we can to get our Gunflint Trail resort log lodge building completed as soon as we can.

When completed, some time around the middle of April 2009, the new log lodge at our Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, MN lakeside family resort will have all of the latest, up-to-date conveniences and ammenities available.

The lower level willl again house our famous "Loggers Lounge", with more room than it previous had. There will be a larger bar, more tables and a larger pool table and recreation area along with a stone fireplace.

The main-entrance level will again be be where our dining room and office will be located along with a new gift shop area and a relaxing "sitting area" complete with a cozy fireplace. The center section of the main level will be open to a two story high roof/ceiling.

Be sure to make your family vacation reservations for our northern MN lakeside cabins, log cabins and cottages earlier than normal for 2009. We anticipate that bookings at our Gunflint Trail resort will fill up faster than normal due to the many great new features and amenities.

In addition, our MN winter cabins, log cabins and cottage rentals are filling up quickly. If you are planning a winter get-away or snowmobiling vacation at our winter resort on the Gunflint Trail we suggest that you make your winter cabin reservations now.

Take a look at the success that the Siwek family had during there stay here at Hungry Jack Lodge. The Siwek family has been staying here at Hungry Jack Lodge for many years and have experienced all kinds of fishing success. This year however they had extremely great luck at a lake and they would not disclose the name of for some great pan fish and Walleyes.

Congratulations on all of the nice fish that you caught. We look forward to seeing your family again next year.

The Sanborn family of Chaska, MN had a great evening of fishing as you can see in the photos. All of these fish were caught with a slip bobber and a leech. The walleye that Gene caught was in about 25ft of water and it measured 28" weighing just under 8 lbs. Tracy's bass was 18" and Tim's bass was about 17".

The Sanborn family are long time returning customers here at Hungry Jack Lodge. The fishing has been very steady with lots of success from several different parties.

HUNGRY JACK LODGE BENEFIT
WAS A HUGE SUCCESS

The “Pigina-polka” cook-out benefit held at Hungry Jack Lodge on Sunday, August 17, 2008 was a huge success. Forrest Parson and Ericka would like to thank everyone that attended and contributed to the event. Proceeds from the event will be of great help in reconstructing a new main lodge to replace the lodge that had been totally destroyed by fire in March of 2008.

The people that attended came from near and far. There were of course many people in attendance that have homes and cabins on Hungry Jack Lake. Business owners and people residing along the Gunflint Trail also were in great numbers as were people from Grand Marais, Lutsen and other towns along the Northshore. There were also people from Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa and other midwestern states at the benefit cook-out.

Most of the people who attended came by car, however a few of the Hungry Jack Lake residents came by canoe and kayak. Overall attendance was greater that expected and exceeded the anticipation of the staff of Hungry Jack Lodge and Campground.

The BBQ baby back ribs and chicken were excellent. Baked beans, coleslaw (with crab meat added) topped off the menu. There were of course plenty of ice cold beverages available to quench the thirst.

In addition to the excellent food there were other activities. Horseshoes, bean bag toss were popular with those who attended. Smaller kids enjoyed swimming at the sand beach on the rather warm and sunny day. Free pontoon boat rides to the base of Honeymoon Bluff, at the east end of Hungry Jack Lake, were an especially great hit with those in attendance.

Again, we at Hungry Jack Lodge and Campground would like to thank all that attended. Your participation and contributions are greatly appreciated.

As construction of our new lodge proceeds will attempt to keep everyone up-to-date on this blog and on the Hungry Jack Lodge and Campground website at www.hungryjacklodge.com.
